Crop Rotation

If the same crop were grown year after year, soil would become devoid of nutrients and soil-borne pests of that crop would build up. To avoid this, different crops must be grown on each bit of ground every year. The graphic above illustrates this pictorially.
In the first year after cultivation, potatoes are generally grown. A cucurbit or any other crop from the year one crops section could also be grown on fresh ground. Following this, a brassica would be a suitable crop. Next a legume should be grown to allow the soil to recover. Manure should be applied and then another first year crop grown, here courgettes. It is imperative that at least three years are allowed between planting of potatoes or other hungry crops. Following this, an allium would be a suitable crop, before finishing the rotation with another legume
