Sweetcorn
Introduction
Sweetcorn is a crop that needs a relatively large amount of space to be successful. For this reason, it is not suitable for anyone with only a small garden. At least 16 plants, planted 45cm (18 inches) apart in grid formation (not rows) are needed for good pollination, and hence cobs.
Cultivation
Sweetcorn plants are best started in a greenhouse or propagator in late April. Do not attempt to sow outdoors until mid-May. Seedlings can be transplanted shortly after germination into their growing position. Protect from late frosts as needed . They should be kept well watered until 45-60cm (18inches-2feet) tall and the flowers are starting to show. Similar growing conditions are required for winter squash and a small-fruited variety, such as a Butternut, will intercrop well. This will cover ground between plants, reducing the need for weeding. Cobs are ready from late August onwards; pick after the tassels have turned brown.
